OUR PRIMARY SCHOOL YEARS
1956 Standard 4 - Mrs Margaret Brown - with 76 students.
The 1956 Legislative Assembly Electoral Roll cites Margaret and Leslie Arthur BROWN living
at 51 Central Ave, Maylands. By 1962 Leslie Arthur was no longer listed, and by 1971 neither of
them was. CBHS student Michael Deering recalls that they had a son, Rodney, who was blind in
one eye but no adult Rodney BROWN was listed at this address in the 1956-1971 period.

1957 Grade 6 - Br George 'Eddie' Edmonds.
In 1957 the WA State Education system adopted a national nomenclature system which
changed the names of each of our learning levels - so the local term 'Standard' became
'Grade' and each class jumped to one level higher numerically than it had been before. Thus,
what would have been Standard 5 for our group in 1957 became our Grade 6. Thus, the old
Infants to Standard 6 sequence changed to Grade 1 to Grade 7 for the seven primary years.

Then, in 1975 the word "Grade" was changed to "Year" and the start of the 13-stage "Year"
system we know today as the K-12 (Pre-Primary + Kindergarten to Year 12) came about.
(Sources - P&C Federation Report of 1956; the Education Circular WA, February 1957;
and the Education Department of WA's Annual Reports 1973-1974-1975).

1958 Grade 7 - Br George 'Eddie' Edmonds - with 88 students at its peak located in
the double classroom alongside the tennis courts on the Perth side of the school. The
CBHS school concert that year saw Br Edmond's massive class put on a Christmas musical
extravaganza based around the song "Oh, You Beautiful Doll!" with our classmate Kevin Clarke
made up as the doll. Br George 'Eddie' Edmonds was later Headmaster at St Francis Xavier
College in East Victoria Park and in 1961 became Headmaster of the Brothers' embryo college,
St Mark's in Beaufort Street, Bedford (Park) known as Chisholm College today
